Let me start this post with the disclaimer that I am not a tax expert as I am sure is the same for most of you reading this.  We are all in the portable sanitation business and are very good at what we do, and work really hard for the money we make.  Since we all work so hard to make a living we deserve to keep as much of the money we earn as possible.  This is where hiring a good accountant can make a huge difference.  Understanding the nuances of tax law can enable you to keep much more of your earned income and purchase new equipment with huge savings to you.

One tax law in particular that we have found useful over the years running a restroom trailer rental company was section 179. Section 179 for 2018 allows you to deduct up to $1,000,000 from your gross income for capital equipment purchases.  These capital equipment purchases can be anything from a new restroom trailer, to a new vacuum truck. Depending on your tax bracket this can be a real savings to you of up to 35% on any equipment you have purchased in 2018.  The savings can be even deeper if you consider there is an expected price increase of around 10% on restroom trailers starting in January of 2019 due to the rising cost of Steel.  If you factor this in you could see a real savings of up to 45% by purchasing a new restroom trailer by the end of 2018.

Another consideration that is often overlooked is the residual value of your restroom trailer.  If you purchase a restroom trailer in 2018 and use section 179 along with the savings of the expected price increase you have just purchased your restroom trailer at up to a 45% discount.  If you are a person that likes to keep your inventory fresh and sells your used restroom trailers every 3 – 5 years you will more than likely be able to recover every dollar you spent since you purchased at such a reduced rate. If you really think about that you have a restroom trailer that will produce income for you year after year and then when you sell it you will get your initial investment back, its pretty hard to beat that!
