As temperatures drop, winterizing your restroom trailer becomes essential to prevent costly repairs from frozen pipes, cracked tanks, broken valves, and other issues. Here’s a quick guide on how to effectively winterize a Lang Trailer, ensuring it’s ready for below-freezing conditions or long-term storage in cold weather climates.
Key Tips Before You Start
- Active Use: If your trailer will still be in use, keep the heat and tank heaters running to prevent freezing.
- Storage Mode: If storing, use RV antifreeze to purge the water lines and tanks.
Winterizing Trailers with Freshwater Systems
- Drain Freshwater Tank: Empty all water from the freshwater tank.
- Flush Out Water: Run all sinks and toilets until water stops flowing, then turn off the water pump.
- Open Valves: Open all accessible valves to fully drain the water lines (Valves 1-6).
- Antifreeze Application:
- Attach the winterization hose to a jug of RV antifreeze and open Valve #5.
- Turn on the water pump and allow antifreeze to flow into the system.
- Open Valve #3 to let antifreeze enter the fresh water tank, then open Valve #4 briefly to clear the spray bar (if applicable).
- Run each fixture (toilets, sinks) until antifreeze flows out.
- Pour Antifreeze in Traps:
- Add ¼ gallon of antifreeze to each urinal trap, if you're not removing the urinal trap insert.
- Add ¼ gallon to each sink drain to fill the "S" traps.
- If you have external handwashing stations, fill those lines as well.
- Waste Tank Maintenance:
- Drain the waste tank completely, and leave the dump valve open to prevent freezing.
- Raise the tongue jack to ensure any residual water doesn’t settle in the dump valve.
Winterizing Trailers Without Freshwater Systems
- Set Up Antifreeze Pump: Connect an RV antifreeze hand pump to the trailer’s exterior water inlet.
- Flush Fixtures: Have one person flush each toilet while another pumps antifreeze into the system until only antifreeze is coming through.
- Purge Spray Bar (if applicable): Open Valve #4 to ensure the spray bar is clear.
- Pour Antifreeze in Traps:
- Add ¼ gallon to each urinal if you're not removing the urinal trap insert and a suitable amount to each sink’s “S” trap.
- Elevate Trailer Front: Tilt the front of the trailer to drain any remaining water away from the dump valve, reducing the risk of freezing damage.
